India Christian Evangelical Free Church is a group
of people who strive towards knowing Jesus better. We are a community that
is deeply convinced that Jesus has made a critical difference in our lives
and we wish to share this with you. It doesn't matter who you are, what your
religious persuasion might be, or even what you are going through in your
life. You matter to us because you matter to God. So whether you're a spiritual
seeker who's just starting to ask questions about God, or a committed Christian
who wants to sink the roots of your faith even deeper, you can find a home
here at ICEFC. We assure you that you will find a warm and welcoming place
in our midst and depth of meaning in your life's journey.
Our history is important to us as we seek to strive towards embracing the
future we believe God has in store for us. We trust you can become part of
this exciting and vibrant future. ICEFC is a thirty year-old Christian community
that was started to assist new immigrants from India and South Asia. The make-up
of North America has radically changed since 1967 when the Immigration Bill
proposed under President Kennedy and implemented under President Johnson radically
changed who entered and contributed to the welfare of this country, along
with previous generations of immigrants who largely came from Europe. Founded
by Mr. Isaac Wilson and others who joined him, ICEFC is the oldest Indian
church in Chicago that has also been instrumental in spawning off other churches
in its history. We thank God for this rich history!
Like any other immigrant community, we struggle with issues of adaptation,
feelings of isolation, and the need for a sense of community as we continue
to experience the changes between the generations and the broader community
we live in. In October of the year 2000, we made a strategic decision to affiliate
ourselves with the Evangelical
Free Church of America. Our name was changed from India Christian Fellowship
Church to India Christian Evangelical Free Church to reflect that our own
church community needed the influence of the broader church and also contribute
towards it, given our unique background and heritage. We are a church that
believes in and lives by the core and historic Statement
of Faith.
We are at a critical juncture as a church community. Building on the past
that was rooted in faith we are moving towards a future that is also rooted
in faith. We are a church in mission as we reach beyond our grasp. This is
simply to say that we firmly believe that we are being called by God to continue
to reach beyond our grasp (faith) and seek him as we respond to him personally
and as a church community.
We firmly believe that God is leading us to become intentionally more culturally
plural. Currently we have people who represent some five language groups from
Southern Asia as well those who were born and raised in America. While we
have historically and very appropriately targeted ourselves within the south
Asian community, we believe that God is calling us to be in mission with people
irrespective of their backgrounds. As a multigenerational immigrant community,
we do have a special burden and desire to serve new immigrant individuals
and families from all over the world as well as those who are brought up within
such an immigrant ethos. We believe that we have a unique and special calling
from God for this.
We are a growing church community, though far from being perfect. We are enthusiastic
about where we are and what God has in store for us and perhaps with you.
We would love to have you join us and get to know us personally. You are invited
to this incredible faith journey in Jesus Christ. |
